In order to boost the high-quality development of the mathematics discipline, establish an advanced platform for basic mathematical research and talent development as well as promote academic collaboration and exchange among Chinese and international scholars, Shandong University Mathematical Research Center (MRC) sets up a Visiting Scholar Funding Program. This program intends to encourage researchers from domestic and international universities or research institutions to engage in relevant academic activities at MRC.
Ⅰ. Categories and Durations:
1. Short-term Visit: one to three weeks.
2. Long-term Visit: typically 1 to 6 months, or 1 year.
Ⅱ. Future Participants:
Both the “Short-term Visit” and “Long-term Visit” are open to all researchers employed at domestic and international universities or research institutions, while the “long-term visit” will give priority to young mathematicians who have recently obtained their doctoral degrees. MRC encourages interdisciplinary collaborations across various fields of mathematics; promotes collaborative research on specific topics among young mathematicians; and supports global young mathematicians in conducting thematic research in collaboration with scholars from Shandong University.
Ⅲ. Funding Details:
We provide the following financial support for all visiting scholars:
1. Accommodation. Scholars on a “Short-term Visit” can opt for the free accommodation provided by Shandong University. If they choose to book accommodation independently, Shandong University offers a daily accommodation allowance (up to RMB 500 per day for a maximum of one month). Please note that hotel receipts must be submitted for reimbursement of actual expenses. Scholars on a “Long-term Visit” must use the free accommodation provided by Shandong University.
2. Living allowance. Scholars on a “Short-term Visit” will receive a daily living allowance, with a subsidy rate of RMB 5,000 per week (calculated at RMB 1,000 per workday if less than a week). Scholars on a “Long-term Visit” will receive a monthly living allowance with a rate of RMB 15,000 per month. The University will withhold and pay individual income tax in accordance with relevant regulations.
3. Travel cost. Scholars on a “Short-term Visit” are eligible for reimbursement of intercity transportation expenses within China, while scholars on a “Long-term Visit” are eligible for reimbursement of one round-trip travel expense. The reimbursement standards will follow the university’s domestic travel expense management regulations. The international travel expense will be reimbursed based on the actual expense, with a funding limit of RMB 15,000.
*Under special circumstances approved by MRC, visitors are permitted to split their visit into separate periods. However, the transportation expenses incurred will be borne by visitors themselves.
4. Expenses for Office of Visiting Scholars and Regular Office Equipment
Ⅳ. Requirements:
1. Visiting scholars should primarily focus on research and complete scheduled tasks of selected research projects in accordance with study and work plans. At the same time, scholars can assist mentors in guiding graduate students and participate in teaching and academic activities such as curriculum development and textbook compilation.
2. Scholars on a “Long-term Visit” are required to submit a brief work summary report to MRC within one month after the visit ends. All the scholars funded by MRC are expected to acknowledge MRC’s support in any academic achievements formally published during the funding period.
3. Visiting scholars must ensure that they are present at work for at least four out of the five workdays per week. If absent for two or more workdays, scholars must submit a leave of absence request, specifying the reasons for absence and the expected return date.
Ⅴ. Applicant Eligibility
1. Applicant must hold a doctoral degree and be engaged in mathematical research or mathematics-related interdisciplinary research at a university or research institution.
2. Application materials include:
(1) Visiting Scholar Application Form for Mathematical Research Center of Shandong University (Appendix 1)
(2) Two recommendation letters. The information in the recommendation letters should be consistent with the recommender information in Attachment 1;
(3) Scanned copy of ID card or passport;
(4) CV, including an applicant’s electronic photo;
(5) Other materials that can demonstrate the applicant’s academic ability, such as publications and project achievement certificates;
(6) Applicants for a “Long-term Visit” must submit a research statement, including research background, recent progress and expected outcomes of the research.
3. Application procedure
(1) Please send all application materials to the email address: mrc@sdu.edu.cn. The email subject should be “Name+Visiting Scholar Application”. Please merge Application materials (3)-(6) into one PDF file in the aforementioned order and name it in the format of “Name + CV”.
(2) If multiple applicants apply as one research group, only one application per group needs to be submitted.
(3) “Long-term Visit” applications must be submitted six months in advance, while “Short-term Visit” applications must be submitted two months in advance.
Ⅵ. Selection Process
