Lecture Series (Issue 16)丨Escher and Droste in Jinan

NEW
The Droste effect is a special visual effect that occurs when a picture contains a smaller image of itself. This leads to recursive images that can potentially be repeated ad infinitum. The 1956 Print Gallery of the Dutch graphic artist Escher presents a mathematica puzzle based on this effect.l will present Hendrik Lenstra's mathematical explanation of this puzzle using the mesmerizing visual illustrations created by the Leiden number theory group.

Let H(n)denote the Hurwitz class number. The classical Hurwitz-Kronecker relations for H(n)can be interpreted asintersection formulas for certain curyes on X0(1)xX0(1)defined by modular correspondence.In this talk, we shall use properties of mock modulal forms to obtain higher-dimensional analoques of class number relations.This is a joint work with Bringmann.Guo,Kane,and Mertens.

In this talk we will explore connections between modula!forms and hypergeometricfunctions,Topics covered in this talk include 1,differential equations satisfied by modula forms, 2. algebraic transformations of hypergeometric functions,3.special values of hypergeometric functions and arithmetic of modular curves, 4. hypergeometric evaluation of L-values of weakly holomorphic modular forms.

Lecture Series (Issue 13)丨Explicit methods for Shimura curves

Shimura curves are generalizations of modular curves.However, because of the lack of cusps on Shimura curves, it is difficult to do computation on Shimura curves.In this talk,we will present two explicit methods for Shimura curves, The first method is to realize modular forms on Shimura curves as solutions of Schwarzian differential equations associated to Shimura curves.The second method is to realize modular forms as Borcherds forms.
