Lecture Series (Issue 23) | Intersecting well approximable and missing digit sets

Let b>2 be an integer and C(b, D) be the set of real numbers in[0,1l whose base b-expansion only consists of digits in a subset D of {0, 1,..., b-1}. Motivated by Mahler's problem, we consider how close can numbers in C(b, D) be approximated by rationalnumbers with denominators being powers of some integer t. Some Hausdorff measure and dimension results wil be given in the talk, The phenomena are different for the following three cases of b and t: (i) multiplicatively dependent.(i:)multiplicatively independent but have the same prime divisors: (iii) the left case.

Lecture Series (Issue 22) | Recent developments of Burgess's method

Starting from 1950s, D. A. Burgess developed an ingenious approach to estimate incomplete characte!sums, appealing to Weil's proof on Riemann Hypothesis for curves over finite fields. This allows him to break the barrier of Pólya-Vinogradov and thus works nontrivially for suitaply short character sums, Buraess's method has been simplified and generalized in the subsequent decades thanks to karatsuba, Friedlander-lwaniec Fouvry-Michel, et al, and it turns out to be very powerfu!in many applications of Fourier analysis to numbe!theory. In this talk,l will give a brief introduction to the relevant history, and present our recent work on estimates for multilinear character sums and exponential sums, as well as applications to distribution of primes. This is based on several joint works with Etienne Fouvry and lgor E. Shparlinski, and with Junren Zheng.
