Quantum degrees of freedom are associated with separable Hilbert spaces.Their orthonormal bases are central for the description of measurements on quantum systems, whereby pairs of“unbiased” bases are particularly important, While maximal sets of pairwise unbiased bases are known for infinitely-dimensional spaces and for spaces with prime-powel dimension,one does not have such sets for spaces with other dimensions,Whether they exist has been an open question for decades.
